Performance and Fitness Assessment Information
WHAT WE DO?
If you are in the San Francisco Bay area, we offer VO2max tests with metabolic threshold ID, FTP95, and exercise energy expenditure graphing (with ‘fat-max’ profile and ID of Zone #2 intensity and HR) among other measures at the Saint Mary’s College Human Performance Lab (SMC HPL) in Moraga California. Additionally, we provide body composition assessment (underwater weighing, skinfolds and bioelectrical impedance analysis) as part of the testing package. All results will be analyzed and reviewed by a certified exercise physiologist. Testing is available on the bike or treadmill.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
This type of testing is ideal for all types of athletes. It will provide you with physiological data to better plan and understand training status and program development. Testing can be completed on either the cycle ergometer or a treadmill.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
This is a fundraising program and DONATIONS will be given directly to the Australian wildlife conservation programs that Saint Mary’s College of California students work with (Wombat Care Bundanoon, Save Our Sea Turtles, and Reef Restoration Foundation, among others) during each January study abroad experience.
These tests cost between $600 - $700+ when performed at other universities or facilities (UC Davis, UCSF, etc.). Most of our participants donate around $250 - $350.
A GoFundMe page (HERE) has been set-up to accept donations. We can also accept VENMO donations to Derek Marks (@Derek-Marks-13 or dscgmarks@sbcglobal.net.) Be sure to mention Australia Wildlife Conservation in the donation info.
HOW DO I PREPARE?
Prepare as you would for a workout. The VO2max test lasts approximately 12-15 minutes and is intended to reach your highest exercise intensity by the end of the test. We will work with you to design a customized protocol if you are doing a treadmill test. On the bike, we utilize a 30 Watt ramp protocol.
Normal hydration and not too much (if any) food in your stomach is ideal.
Water and a small snack are a good idea to bring.
Bring/wear clothing that is comfortable to run or cycle in.
For underwater weighing, please bring a bathing suit and towel.
We have bathrooms for changing, so some dry clothes may be useful.
CYCLISTS - we have SPD mountain pedals, as well as Look and Look KEO pedals in the lab. We can put your pedals on our bike however, they must be removable with a pedal wrench and not with the back-side Alan Key.
PLEASE complete the PAR-Q and INFORMED CONSENT forms (see below) and bring them with you. We can NOT test any subject who answers YES to any question on the PAR-Q.
